A resource for all children with dyspraxia in the Vale of Glamorgan

Leadership call

The current voluntary group leaders and the voluntary youth coordinator have been in position for over seven years now and plan to move out of the area quite soon. A new leadership could bring fresh ideas and the next generation of young people are needed to continue to raise awareness of the condition.

Activities over the past 7 years have included:

  • Bilingual helpline, website

  • Monthly meetings, often with an invited speaker

  • Social activities (parties, 10-pin bowling, cinema trips, boat trips, visits to e.g. Techniquest, BBQs, and joint activities with e.g. Disability Sports Wales

  • Advocacy and networking with Welsh Government, LEAs, schools, colleges, the Vale Volunteer Bureau, Vale Youth Project, VCVS

  • Liaison with Careers Wales re: transitional years

  • Bilingual leaflets, factsheets, lending library of books and resources

  • Partnership working with the Dyscovery Centre and Atlantic College to provide free activities for young people

  • Loan scheme for laptops with typing tutor and Alphasmarts

  • Bilingual DVD “Living with Dyspraxia”

  • Networking with other support groups e.g. Aphasia Cymru, Dyslexia Action, LLamau, Bullies Out, a number of faith groups and uniformed youth groups

  • Fundraising (e.g. stalls, quizzes).

A few hundred pounds of grant money plus our own fundraising and volunteered time have gone far and could continue to do so in the future. Although dyspraxia and associated conditions are becoming better understood, there remains much to do.

Maybe you have an interest in helping young people with dyspraxia and its associated conditions such as dyslexia and ADHD to reach their full potential. If so please contact the group on valedyspraxia@aol.com or 01446 738945.
